The Highland Perk Coffeehouse

Sunday, March 11, 2007 10:34 22 Comments

You know how it goes, once a respectable coffee house opens its doors in an area that was formerly off the trendy-middle-class radar it’s a good sign that the neighborhood has gone to the diamond-studded-collar-wearing dogs, which, in my opinion, is just what the economist ordered. Highland Perk is to Highland Park what Casbah Cafe [...]

ZenChi Cafe

Tuesday, March 6, 2007 17:48 7 Comments

For over a year I have driven past a nice-looking venue (at 11334 Moorpark, just east of Tujunga) where a posted sign promised “ZenChi – Coming 05.â€? Eventually the sign was changed to read “Ok….2006.â€?
Funny! At least these restaurateurs have a sense of humour.
Well at long last ZenChi Cafe [...]

Studio City just got a little sweeter — Big Sugar Bakeshop

Monday, February 5, 2007 14:00 10 Comments

A cute new bakery, Big Sugar Bakeshop, has just opened on Ventura Street Blvd in Studio City, just west of Laurel Canyon (sort of opposite Mexicali).
So far I’ve been in three times and tried something different each time. The treats here are way more affordable than the deluxe, tiny, two-bite-sized cupcakes from Ledas (which [...]

That’s Gourmet, Baby: Fritelli’s Donuts & Coffee

Wednesday, January 17, 2007 21:16 7 Comments

Back in October, I played a little game with myself (yeah, I don’t have a lot of friends). The game was called “Guess the Next Food Trend” and my guess, for the successor to cupcakes and “natural” frozen yogurt, was gourmet donuts. Well, the food gods must have been listening because a couple of weeks [...]

Having spent the better part of the previous 24 hours locked up in transit, trying to make the short connection in Taipei, being searched by suspicious Chinese security officers, the last thing this weary traveler wanted to realize after waking in a jet-lagged stupor [...]

KC’s Crepes. A fine choice on a lazy afternoon

KC’s Crepes - Lincoln Blvd and Manchester - close to Otis and Loyola
I’m letting my readers in on the biggest semi undiscovered crepe/boba place on the westside..shhh! I don’t want everyone to flood to it, to make it more crowded than it already is on a Saturday afternoon…but as a dedication to my quest for [...]

French 75 Bistro, Burbank — a Parisian wannabe

Last week I posted a query regarding this place. You can read the recs I received here –

I’m going to adopt Poet Kitty’s style for this review (thanks, PK – you rock!)
Very chic, cosy and large bar area. Warm vibe. French reproduction – stamped tin ceiling, little (faux) paintings, period light fixtures and other decorative [...]

Dreamy deliciousness at Gelato Bar

Friday, September 29, 2006 0:23 14 Comments

Tujunga Avenue in Studio City (just south of Moorpark) is rapidly becoming LA’s very own Little Italy (at last!), what with Caioti Pizza (so-so) and old-skool Italian joints like Vitellos (the death restaurant – just ask Bonnie Lee Bakely). Village Gourmet has an array of wonderful imported goodies too.
Now we have a cosy little breakfast [...]
