Australian Made foods have landed in LA!

A vibrant and familiar iconic symbol caught my eye at Gelsons, yesterday. It was a golden flying kangaroo inside a green triangle = Aussies! Turns out there were some new Aussie products to sample and I was feeling peckish.

Here’s a bit of background:
Many of you dear readers will already know that A.O.C. [...]

Tired old Food Fads in LA

Basil foam as created and invented by Ferran Adria at El Bulli, Spain.
Are you fed up with foam?
All truffle-oiled out?
Deathly sick of soft serve?
During the eighties in restaurants and kitchens everywhere (at least in Sydney), there was such a wholesale preoccupation with sun-dried tomatoes, placing them front and centre in virtually every [...]

Snapea SHENANIGANS? Actually, no……………………..

Tuesday, March 13, 2007 18:48 3 Comments

I was strolling through Ranch 99 on Sepulveda, picking up some inexpensive fresh shrimp and small boxes of coconut cream and so forth, when I remembered my new obsession – Snapea Crisps.
Yu Shan had made a comment on my post, mentioning that these tasty morsels had been around for about four years, in different [...]

The Highland Perk Coffeehouse

Sunday, March 11, 2007 10:34 22 Comments

You know how it goes, once a respectable coffee house opens its doors in an area that was formerly off the trendy-middle-class radar it’s a good sign that the neighborhood has gone to the diamond-studded-collar-wearing dogs, which, in my opinion, is just what the economist ordered. Highland Perk is to Highland Park what Casbah Cafe [...]

Tea With Jam, Jam & Scones…

My intense disdain for scones ended, however, when I arrived in London and went to afternoon tea. I expected little finger sandwiches and was rather disappointed [...]

Studio City just got a little sweeter — Big Sugar Bakeshop

Monday, February 5, 2007 14:00 10 Comments

A cute new bakery, Big Sugar Bakeshop, has just opened on Ventura Street Blvd in Studio City, just west of Laurel Canyon (sort of opposite Mexicali).
So far I’ve been in three times and tried something different each time. The treats here are way more affordable than the deluxe, tiny, two-bite-sized cupcakes from Ledas (which [...]

Korean-Mexican Fusion: Kalbi Tacos?

Wednesday, January 31, 2007 9:52 3 Comments

What I like best about living in LA is the accessibility to almost any type of food you crave. The SGV is home to many cantonese, chinese and taiwanese establishments. Little Tokyo and the South Bay are home to delicious japanese food. Thai food in Hollywood, etc. But Koreatown has to be one of the [...]

Snapea Crisps — moorish delights from Trader Joe’s

Thursday, January 25, 2007 18:56 25 Comments

I was offered these tastly little delights at my good friends John and Marianne’s place recently and I just couldn’t get enough of them! Light and crispy, with just the right amount of salt, these slender snacks have a distinctly nutty (legume-y) flavour and are irresistible. There’s a slight greasiness to them, too, but [...]
