Sushi Cali-style — Kiwami
Monday, April 18, 2011 18:40 7 CommentsOkay, it’s hardly traditional sushi — way too much sauce, mayo and spice — but Sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi knows how we like our sushi in L.A.
Part of the Katsuya-group of restaurants around LA, Kiwami opened a few doors down from the original Katsuya in Studio City, which opened in 1997.
If you want [...]
Farewell, Ortolan
Wednesday, February 2, 2011 15:43 8 CommentsAnother one of my favorite places has closed its doors. I received the email a while that Ortolan will not be opening again. For those who did not get to experience the wonderful food here, feel free to live vicariously through me by reading this previous post. Here’s wishing Chef Eme luck [...]

Review by MaxMillion
Touted as LA’s premier tequila destination, El Carmen Restaurant celebrates ‘Dia de los Muertos’ with a November 2nd event, from 8:00pm until 2:00am. This event will feature *live* Mariachis from 9:00pm to midnight in addition to food and drink specials – including El Carmen’s famous Classic Margaritas ($4.00 each!) and $3.00 Tecate®.
In keeping [...]
Geisha House — Très Ordinaire
Friday, September 10, 2010 12:46 13 CommentsOkay, I’ll preface this review with the disclaimer that I was taken out to eat at Geisha House by a visiting European travel/food writer and so, mercifully, I did not pay for this meal.
A free meal at an overrated, passé sushi spot – how bad could it suck?!
Well, it didn’t completely suck, but it certainly [...]
Boho in Hollywood does a good burger
Thursday, September 2, 2010 14:23 13 Comments***
I am not a burger aficionado whatsoever, but I recently had a major craving for a substantial lunch on a Sunday and somehow we ended up at Boho, in the heart of Hollywood on Sunset, right between the Arclight cinemas and hip Amoeba records.
Various restaurants have come and gone in that conveniently located space, including [...]
Foundry on Melrose – late night groovy dining
Wednesday, September 1, 2010 13:04 7 CommentsWhen you are a critic (theatre, film, food, art etc) you generally have to see movies and plays during the dinner hour. I am a big fan of post-show suppers, but unfortunately in this show-biz town the kitchens of most of the decent restos shut down around 10pm, right when the newest remake or [...]
Pho 999 - pretty lame…
Tuesday, August 31, 2010 13:40 10 CommentsOkay, I am no pho (pronounced “fah”) expert, but I do know that the broth should be quite clear.
Cloudy broth, such as the bland dishwater served at Pho 999, simply does not cut it.
Phor those who don’t know, pho is a Vietnamese soup, similar to Japanese ramen or soba, that is usually served with beef [...]
Festa della Mamma — Mother’s Day at Locanda del Lago
Friday, May 7, 2010 14:45 2 Comments Okay, this week I had my first visit to Locanda del Lago in Santa Monica and I was truly blown away by the fantastic Italian fare.
We ate some stuff I’d never had before (namely thinly sliced tongue with a vibrant parsley pesto) and my companion was also very impressed with the quality of [...]
